I stare at the photo, trying to recapture the moment.

The screensaver fades to the next slide, taking it from me.

Isn’t it always that way? There are moments you wish would last forever, when you wish time would stand still, when you wish they wouldn’t end.

But they do, slipping away in time’s impervious grasp.

I click back to the photo, watching until the slide again fades. Too bad life isn’t that way. No matter how much I might wish it, there is no pause button.

There’s no going back.

Why does it hurt so much?

A slight smile lifts the edges of my mouth as a remembered conversation soothes the raw edges of the wound.

That’s why it hurts. Because life isn’t supposed to be this way.

Someday, those moments will last forever.
